Boston Society of Film Critics winners: "Hurt"'s so good

The Boston Society of Film Critics has made its choices for 2009 and I found two results particularly noteworthy. The first is the tie for Best Ensemble Acting. I know our group has been criticized for ties before but this one has even got me scratching my head: "Precious" and "Star Trek?" Now there's a twinbill for you.

The other notable result is the five awards for "The Hurt Locker," including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Editing and Cinematography. It's the first time our group has given out so many awards to one film.

Here, then, are the winners:

BEST PICTURE: "The Hurt Locker"

BEST DIRECTOR: Kathryn Bigelow

BEST ACTOR: Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker").

BEST ACTRESS: Mery Streep ("Julie & Julia")

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Christoph Waltz (" Inglourious Basterds")

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:  Mo' Nique ("Precious")

BEST ENSEMBLE: (tie) "Precious" and "Star Trek"

BEST SCREENPLAY: Joel and Ethan Coen for "A Serious Man"

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Barry Ackroyd for "The Hurt Locker"

BEST EDITING: Chris Innis and Bob Murawski for "The Hurt Locker"

THE DAVID BRUDNOY AWARD FOR BEST NEW FILMMAKER: Neill Blomkamp for "District 9"

BEST DOCUMENTARY: "The Cove"

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: "Summer Hours"

BEST "USE OF MUSIC:" "Crazy Heart" (T-Bone Burnett and Jeff Bridges)

By the way, the BSFC Award Ceremony is February 6 at the Brattle Theatre. Come see your favorite critics mispronounce names!
