From the ProJo's Ashes
Scott Kingsley, former assistant managing editor for photography and graphics at the ProJo, is not a terribly religious guy. But after a couple of recent trips to church, he had a small epiphany.
A casualty of the latest round of ProJo layoffs, he noticed some advertising in the church bulletin and decided he'd put out an advertising-supported bulletin of his own. The Stimulus Times, a quirky look at our little bout with financial ruin, was born.
The newsletter, distributed on the East Side of Providence, features some punchy writing from former projo.com staffer Brandie Jefferson and some production help from ex-ProJoer Denise Bass.
Kingsley says the Times, which just published its second edition, is a break-even enterprise for now. But he has no plans to go bigger, despite calls from supporters that he publish a "real newspaper."
"I don't know if they noticed," he said, "but the real newspaper model hasn't worked."
