The old adage “Don’t judge a book by its cover” holds true at Watertown’s Talk of the Town Diner. I’d often driven by this unassuming-looking diner without a backward glance; it was only when a banner went up proclaiming “Voted #1 Diner in Watertown” that I slowed down and took notice. In a town full of diners, this was high acclaim.

Perhaps it’s the friendly service, hearty fare, and laid-back attitude at Talk of the Town that inspire people to line up in the rain for their turn to order a Western omelet ($7.25), chocolate pancakes ($6.50), and French toast ($4.95). Inside, the Keuchkarian family’s diner is cozy and welcoming. There are newspaper clippings of the town’s basketball team on the bulletin board, mixed in with family photos. The specials — like the Kaz Jr. ($8.95), featuring sirloin-steak tips and two eggs with toast and homefries — are named after family members.

And as at most family dinners, everyone pitches in to get the job done. There is no hostess; instead, the closest waitress will ask who’s next in line when a table or counter space becomes available. If the waitstaff is occupied when your food is ready, the kitchen staff will deliver it to your table, so it’s always served hot and fast, but without making you feel rushed.

Eggs Benedict specials ($7.95 and up) are available only on weekends and are worth ordering; the ham and Hollandaise sauce are both thick and filling. Or try an omelet ($5.25 and up), crêpe-thin and big enough to ensure that you don’t leave hungry.
