ALCOHOL RESEARCH STUDY
The Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University is looking for heavy drinkers who drink alcohol on a regular basis for a research study of the effects of medications on reactions to drinking alcohol.
The study involves about 7 to 8 weeks. After two half-hour sessions, one for a medical screening and one for a brief physical exam, and one one-hour session for questionnaires, the medication phase will take about 7 weeks in a row. During four of these weeks you will take one of four different combinations of two medications, or a medication and a placebo, or two placebos. The medications are naltrexone (ReVia® or Trexan®) and ondansetron (Zofran®). During these weeks you will also record how many drinks you had each day and at the end of each of the four weeks you will spend the afternoon and evening in our lab, having beer for 45 minutes, filling out some questionnaires, then having some nonalcoholic drinks and some food. The additional 3 weeks in between will require no research activities.
Participants must be at least 21 years old and pass a medical screening, including blood, urine and breath tests. Participants will be compensated $30 for the medical screening and up to $595 for completing the rest of the study, with all payments in the form of merchandise certificates to stores.
