DANCE MANIA It might have been relatively low-key, but Soul Clap’s Eli Goldstein provided the requisite euphoria with an edit of “Naive Melody.” |
For some, the night before Thanksgiving can be a greater cause for celebration than the holiday itself — an opportunity to return to the old stomping grounds, imbibe oneself with threatening amounts of alcohol, and play catch-up with some forlorn acquaintances. Not being the masochistic type, I opted to stick around the city and let my dancing do the uncomfortable talking for me, making my way over to the Phoenix Landing in Cambridge for a homecoming throwdown by Soul Clap.
Meteoric rise would be an understatement regarding the path Boston's most libidinous DJ duo have taken over the past few years. Even in the mere months since their last hometown visit, they've netted a number of career milestones — notably their inclusion in the 16-hour marathon of a season-closer at Ibiza's esteemed Circo Loco party and a monthly residency at Miami's Electric Pickle alongside NYC brethren Wolf + Lamb.
So if Wednesday's affair seemed a tad more low-key than what they've grown accustomed to — with only one member of the duo, Eli Goldstein, in attendance, taking to the decks only following the evening's trivia jockey and after the dinner-time tables had been cleared — that's because it was. But the communal atmosphere afforded by it being the eve of the most familial of all holidays helped. As did the mid-set inclusion of a "Naive Melody" edit, with a filthy four-four kick and David Byrne's croon inspiring one of the most euphoric dance floor moments I've had in some time.
Towards the tail-end of the night, Goldstein dropped Soul Clap's recent remix of "Tourist Trap" by Eleven Eleven, a collaboration between minimal mastermind Guy Gerber and house-music newbie P. Diddy. Prominently featuring ad-libs by the aforementioned mogul and a chorus repeating " 'Cause I've been leaning on the bar, looking cooler than a star," it rang ironic, if only because not a single person in the room was leaning anywhere or attempting to look all that cool.
