A whirlwind year of dance

From Fela! to Merce

Here's a look at highlights from my year of dance viewing.

FELA!, the dance show by Bill T. Jones, made it onto the screen in January with a live performance simulcast at local movies houses from the National Theater of Britain. Fela! is a skillful blend of dance, music, media, and talk. The show, which collected three Tonys, is built around the life of the Nigerian Afrobeat musician and political activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Live dance, especially ballet and contemporary dance, is still resistant to decent filming, though when Fela got the audience up on its feet to try some pelvic gyrations, I wanted to join in.
