Last week we chronicled the improbable rise of WE ARE AUGUSTINES, a Brooklyn-based rock band that formed out of the tragic and fiery ashes of the late, great Pela. Tonight the Boston Phoenix teams up with Bowery Boston in bringing the Augustines to Great Scott in Allston, a night of celebration, triumph, and really great fucking music.

Nathan Williams has come a long way since Barcelona. The story has been well told, and if you're even a remote fan of WAVVES, I'm certain you've heard it. But for the uninitiated, a truncated version of the happenings: Williams and then drummer Ryan Ulsh played Spain's Primavera Sound Festival in early 2009.

A ton of bands have made a ton of records that self-consciously mine the intimate, whispery chamber-folk of the first Iron and Wine or Bon Iver records. Most of ‘em ain’t worth shit. Boston’s GEM CLUB, on the other hand, are in the big leagues: achingly quiet, blissfully soft, and heartbreakingly pretty. With just a single EP under their belt, our readers voted this Somerville duo the Best New Act in our 2011 Best Music Poll.

Here is tonight's Boston Accents playlist, and it's a fucking doozy. We kicked it off with a double shot of THE FAUX, then rolled back to the early-'00s for some post-millennial garage rock ruckus, gave some love to the Granite State, and debuted a brand new STEREO TELESCOPE remix from DJ DIE YOUNG, which got finished roughly 16 minutes before I entered it into the WFNX library.

We try to keep the horn-tooting to a minimum around here, but we'd be remiss if we didn't give a heads-up about Boston Phoenix music editor and WFNX local-music host MICHAEL MAROTTA's foray into the record business. The first track off debut EP You Are Not Going to Heaven, “(A)NH” has already dropped the jaws of early-’90s college rock revival enthusiasts, and co-vocalist William Scales' Thurston Moore impression fits perfectly over the sludgy, noisy, chain-link fence guitarwork.

Three vibrant Boston bands emerged Thursday night at Church during the release party for the HELICOPRIA, a developing prog-rock band formed at Berklee that last week dropped their self-titled debut album.
